I initially was going to give this two stars, because I found it disappointing. But that was the fault of the product description – not of the book. I ordered this thinking that it would be something like “Avengers: Infinity War: The Heroes' Journey.” That was a YA-level novelization that filled in some missing backstory from new perspectives, had a couple new adventures, and provided a recap of events in a highly entertaining way. This is definitively a children’s book – for very young children.

This is also laid out as a series of journal entries, like the other book, but it is written for an audience who is still at the Little Golden Books’ age level. The sentences are simple, with no more than a few per page, and is heavy on illustrations and pictures. The journal design changes based upon the hero, so Black Widow’s pages look more like a scrapbook, with images that appear “taped in”, while Nebula’s looks like computer log entries for a futuristic, outer space character. The artwork is excellent, easily the best feature of the book, and is the main reason I will keep this in my collection.

Other reviewers have pointed out inconsistencies between what is here and what occurred in the films; most notably Heimdall stating that Hela killed Odin, which was not what happened in the film. This was irritating for me an as adult, but the target age group is probably not seeing these movies (especially Infinity War) and is only aware of them in a “superheroes are everywhere” way. So, I won’t fault the book on that score.

Overall, adults should probably skip this unless they have small children. However, it’s a very good, well designed book for the target audience.
