“The Wrong Man” is the story of Sam Schuler, a man who is trying to start a new life with his future wife, who is also pregnant. In order to do that, he needs to make some changes and stay away from the seedy people he once knew. But things don’t go exactly as planned. When Sam’s former best friend involves him in a petty drug theft, Sam gets the attention of a local street gang. The problem is that his friend manages to skip town, something that Sam cannot afford now, when he has to protect his girlfriend and his family. Before he knows it, he is in over his head, and his only solution is to contact his cousin, Tommy, and ask for his help. But taking down Owen, the leader of the street gang, is just as difficult as trying to reason with him. Sam can’t prove that he is not guilty of stealing the drugs, and he can’t pay the gang leader either. The only choice he’s left with is to go against him.
Matthew Louis is amazing when it comes to character development. Readers will immediately like Sam and root for him. He evolves a lot by the end of the novel, proving that he is a strong and determined man who will not allow anyone to hurt his loved ones. The way the characters interact is very believable, and the author managed to capture the strong language and tough attitude of gang members who are dead serious when they threaten someone and want to convince them to pay for whatever they have stolen. The plot is beautifully crafted, and the fast-paced action will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
“The Wrong Man” is one of those novels that readers will not easily forget. Sam Schuler is a powerful character who is tormented by the idea that he dragged his own family into a dangerous mess that might cost him his life and the lives of many innocent people. The readers will feel the character’s tension while he’s struggling to protect the ones he loves, which makes this book much more than a great thriller: it turns it into a psychological novel that will determine readers to ask themselves how far they would go to stay alive and protect the innocent.
