Contemporary Romance: Three Colorado career women are determined that old ways - even those that have failed - are safer than facing change and romance.Shelly would rather fail as a single parent than let a handsome stranger work with her troubled son. Stormi will quit her job and leave town before renewing friendship with an old love. Tula will face business failure before considering an unconventional love. Will these women find the faith to look change in the eye? Can three determined men convince them determined men convince them to take the walk down the aisle to love's surprising treasures?

Four short stories that all take place around the house on Cranberry Hill. Each story takes place decades after each other and shows how the house has been used down through the years and the different people that lived in it.

My favorite was the first story, 'Finishing Touches'. When Tabitha jilts her husband-to-be the day before their wedding, her sister, Libby must serve as Captain Gregory Royce's bride in her sister's place. Although Libby has loved Gregory from afar, she realizes her new husband has only had eyes for her sister. She will transform the house on Cranberry Hill into a home and hope that one day her husband will see what a jewel he got.

'Beyond the Memories' takes place after World War I, where you find the house on Cranberry Hill used to help the older folks who mentally couldn't handle the war and then the depression. Miss Maime lives there and her and her husband Clay purchased the house when they married. But Clay never came home after the war and Maime believes he died. When a handicapped gentleman shows up to help her out around the house you will discover who he is and why he is keeping his identity hidden from Maime. The author of this story notes that her desire is to show characters solving real problems of today from a Christian perspective through a compelling story; I felt she did a very good job doing this.

In 'Finally Home' you have Brian Lowe returning to Cranberry Hill mansion in a wheelchair after being hurt during the Vietnam War. He will be assigned a physical therapist, Kathy, who will be a great help in helping him physically and mentally get through this dark time in his life.

Finally, in 'The Pretend Family' (also a favorite of mine) you have Tadd Winsted, who has turned the house into a grand restaurant and although he has made it a success, to his parents in Germany he will never be a success until he finds a wife. So Tadd tells his parents he got married. When his parents decide to come back to the States to meet his new wife and child, Tadd hires Sabrena and her daughter to pose as his family when his parents come. I liked this storyline, but felt it was rushed and wish it could have taken longer to tell the story.½

This book is very good, especially "Down from the Cross".
The concern we should have for unsaved friends was made very clear in this book.

Three stories all set in Colorado. In A Winning Match Shelly Morris in a single Mom trying to raise a 15 year old son, who is angry at the world. Bart Steel has an unorthodox way of helping her son, but Shelly will need to trust him.
In Downhill Stormi McNeil has 2 jobs, working at a ski resort and a cafe, to pay off some bad debt. All is going well until in walks Mark Denton, the man who stole her heart and then sent her packing years ago. He claims he is a new man, but can Stormi take a chance on having her heart broken all over again.
In The Wedding Planner Tula O'Brian meets Clint Murphy at a wedding. She was the wedding planner and he was a guest. From the brief meeting Clint realizes he doesn't want to grow old alone and quickly makes his feelings known to Tula. Since Tula has made bad choices in the husband department, she is not ready for Clint's quick proclamation of love. But Clint can be very persuasive.
I liked all 3 stories, but "Downhill" and "The Wedding Planner" were my favorites. I especially liked The Wedding Planner because it was about two "older" people who had already passed the prime of their life, but still had lots of room left to love again. And I really appreciated how the author used the gospel message in "Downhill". Good job Joyce Livingston!½

Enjoyed both books. This story picks up where the first one left off. Valentine Denay has started a "Red Hat Widow's Club", has found someone to love again, and is trying to find out what is going on with her neighbor Barbie, who seems to be losing it! This second book had a little mystery and intrigue thrown it!½

The story of widow Valentine Denay and her friends (who are widows). Add to her life a new neighbor, a new project to head up, a new gentleman friend in her life, and a new lady who is expecting and her husband is away in the military. Life is never boring for Valentine.½
