An incredibly well researched, well written book that has opened my eyes to a side of New England's history that my privilege has allowed me to be ignorant of for my entire life. This book is an essential read for any one who has roots in New England or those who believe that white people in the North did not have slaves.

A carefully-researched history of slavery and its aftermath in Concord, Massachusetts. Lemire musters available sources to create a historically-grounded account of the (very small) slave community in Concord before, during and in the years after the Revolutionary War. By profiling the town itself, as well as its residents (white and black, slave-holders and slaves), Lemire has written a captivating narrative of real people and their times.
