Critiques

My husband used the book to help restore our 1974 Super Beetle. He found the step by step instructions and visuals helpful in restoring it. Diagrams helped show him how to trouble shoot. Overall, the book was useful and added to additional information he had found.

This paperback book is filled with pictures, charts, and photos. It is more helpful for anyone who is unfamiliar with VWs rather than anyone experienced in serious hands-on maintenance. It is a good book to have in your collection, but should not be the only one on volkswagons.
Note that the original review was "lost" in Library Thing's cyberspace and was much more extensive. We apologize.

As a former Beetle owner I was intrigued to read a resto manual that was newly published - it's a far cry from my trusty Haynes Manual that I somehow managed to keep since the 80's - guess I'm just one of those types. This volume takes a fairly formulaic approach to restoration - a bit of history, some insights into acquiring your first bug, and then breakdowns of the various approaches. Best thing about the book are the detailed photos - there are many of them interwoven into the text - I do wish that some of the photos were a bit larger as in some instances some details are hard to identify - but then again there are no perfect books. This one is fairly comprehensive and a far cry from my old Haynes, which focuses primarily on the mechanicals. I'm not sure if someone without some basic mechanical experience could make the most of a restoration with this book alone but it does make a good attempt to at least point newbies into the right direction, especially on approach.

Full disclosure, I received this as part of the LibraryThing Early Readers program.
