Courte biographie
During the 1980s John Lea played a leading role, together with Jock Young, in the development of 'Left Realist' criminology. This included their publication What Is To Be Done About Law and Order? (1984) and Losing the Fight Against Crime (1986) For a time these were among the most quoted books in British criminology and, some say, had an influence on the crime and justice policies of the New Labour governments of 1997.

More recently John has concentrated on theoretical formulations of Left Realist criminology as in his book Crime and Modernity (2002) but has also taught and published across a range of topics in criminology including criminal justice, crime prevention, security and risk, urban riots, crime and warfare. His present focus includes the increasing role of privatisation in criminal justice.

In July 2014 he was appointed an Honorary Professor at Leicester.
