This fiction is set in the Wisconsin territory in the early to mid 1800's. I did enjoy the mention of real people and our regional history. Since the aim of the book is to show why a woman would prefer to live with a tribal group rather than with her own culture (white), most of the focus was on the severity and abuse experienced growing up in a pioneer family and on the harshness experienced when she was forcibly removed from the tribal group (where she had created loving relationships with a grandparent, spouse, children). It also shows how Maggie dealt with an identity crisis of someone split between cultures.
However, it wasn't a very happy read, so I give it a lower star rating. Nothing wrong with the author's prose, just my reaction to the story. I did like the chapter-head illustrations, which appeared to be lino-cut block prints.
