I was delighted to receive Astrology in the Era of Uncertainty: An Astropoetic Exploration of Psyche and Cosmos by Joe Landwehr through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers programme.

The book is not a pop Astrology book, but rather a serious look into the art of astrology and the relation to philosophy, psychology and mythology. The introduction, as well as the rest of the book, is well thought out and written in a clear concise manner.

This is a book that should be in every collection. It is certainly a reference to be consulted to aid in the understanding and application of astrology to the challenges we face in an ever conflicted world.… (plus d'informations)

Astrology in the Era of Uncertainty by Joe Landwehr is not a leisurely book to read quickly for fun. This is a scholarly and very serious book investigating the art and psychology of the practice of astrology.
As is my usual practice, I began with the Introduction, which I will usually skim through to give myself a general idea of what the book I am about to read is about. In this case I actually read the Introduction with interest. It not only gives a prelude to the book, it give key information as to how to read this book and what to look out for.
There is a definite respect for science and how the scientific method works, saying so, it also explains why the scientific method does not work when explaining the art of astrology.
This book gives you a historical outlook of not just astrology, but human nature as we, the human, have evolved through out the millennia. Breaking down human history into different eras of awareness (ex: the mythopoetic era, the mystical era, the philosophical era), Landwehr walks us through to possible patters of human awareness that allowed for the various forms of astrology.
A theme to this study is the need of the astrology and their patron(s) to develop a relationship that allows for intuitive understanding of reading. This encompasses the cultural and philosophical structures in which the people are living.
Heavily annotated, this book is a wonderful resource not just for an individual who is interested in astrology, but for. a person who is interested in psychology, philosophy, human history, and other areas of human development.
