The grand old man of Lithuanian letters, Vincas Kreve laid the foundation for many levels and styles of Lithuanian prose and drama, greatly extending the powers of spoken Lithuanian to function as an effective written medium. Legends of the Old People of Dainava (1912) elevated the heroic afficher plus Lithuanian, using quasi-folkloristic language that approaches high poetry. The historical plays Sarunas (1912) and Skirgaila (1925) depict Lithuanian rulers confronted with tremendous moral and intellectual challenges as they struggle to create and then defend a unified Lithuanian nation.
