I honestly thought I had read this in my youth, as Valerie King was a Regency Romance name I trusted, but if I had I blocked it out (and 1838 is pushing it for the Regency time period, since it ended more like in 1820).

While Alexandra resembles me in some ways, she decidedly does NOT in others. Additionally the split plot meant the entire backcover felt like a different book.

I'm not even sure...this'll show you how much my tastes changed from Lexie 10 Years Ago--this book is hard to believe. But I know I enjoyed it oh so long ago because it's recorded in my "Books To Keep" journal and I only wrote books worth giving shelf space to in that.

The stories were entirely too short for what they wanted. As none of the couples knew each other, and the murder being the catalyst, there was no time for it, the romance, to build.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Lord Aubrey Kelthorne owns a huge property in Somerset, large enough to host a castle, an apple orchard, and a beautiful cottage in which he dwells.

Judith Lovington has been hiding her privileged past and working with an acting troupe. The group chanced upon Lord Kelthorne' s property and requested permission to set up camp on it. Dared by her fellow actors, Judith sneaks into the orchard to steal a few apples and prove her bravery. Kelthorne, riding through the orchard, encounters Judith when his dog Rufus, pounced upon her to shower her with kisses. This chance meeting will change both of their lives forever.

This was a beautiful love story. It was a great example of what it was like back then with the differences in classes, society and social circles. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was that you felt for Judith and wanted things to go well for her. Kelthorne was a confused soul. I couldn't believe that because Judith wasn't socially proper for him that he went running to Miss Currivard. I would have slapped him myself for him to make her second best. Overall, this was a magnificent historical romance and a great page turning one at that.

I am putting this book up on Bookmooch

I have to vent. I had expected a different take on this story.

It feels like the author is lecturing the reader for reading historical romances, wich seems a kind of paradox to me.Constant remarks about the heroine spending too much time writing her stories and immersing herself in her imagination.

I can agree that to become too involved in a fantasy world isnt healthy for you,but without imagination where would we be?

I dont think much of the heroine either she comes across as childish and contrary just for the sake of it(shes 26 years old) The things she looks for in a man is something a 14 year old girl might find fantasize about

The hero is somewhat better, more matu re but I have to feel connected to both sides of a couple to buy the romance. Its just stated that he is in love with the heroine in the few first pages.b

Probably will think twice before giving this author another try.
