Harrowing collection of first-hand accounts of the conquest of Prussia and Danzig by Russian forces in the winter and spring of 1945, as related largely by civilians (though the boundary between civilian and military was blurred by the Volksstrum). The epic and tragic nature of the evacuations of millions of Germans from the area is recounted, though one can't help but think of the populations that had been so treated by the Germans in the 1938-1943 period.
