This style of guide, short at 160 pages and commonly found in natural museum gift shops, just doesn't work for me. There are simply too few examples of the commonly encountered trees, shrubs, flowering plants, birds, mammals, etc. For example, the book has illustrations of 2 species of Warbler, 3 species of Sparrow. That is barely "an introduction to familiar" species.
You're not going to find what you are looking for. An alternative to carting around a half dozen comprehensive guides, might be to have a guide for each of the significant ecological regions of the State.½

This little pamphlet is handy but I don't think the pictures are very good. They do not show, list the all the different colors the flowers can take and their descriptions are pretty poor compared to what they could be. I have used much better guides. The state of Texas puts out a wild flower pamphlet that is much better but I haven't found a way to get a hold of another copy.

It's great. But I wish it had spiders as well.

This compact, portable laminated pamphlet contains delicate drawings of widespread wildflowers, sorted by colors for easy identification, along with information on how best to identify wildflowers. This is a very nice guide to tuck in pick nick basket or backpack, as it weighs nothing, and knowing what a plant IS can certainly enhance the enjoyment of it.

This compact, portable laminated pamphlet contains delicate drawings of common plants and trees that were traditionally used for medicinal usage. It is easy to use, with simple, yet detailed, descriptions of the plant, a note on its habitat and a brief line on it's medicinal usage. This is a nice reference for anyone interested in early remedies or simply interested in possible medicinal usage of common, widespread plants.
