Fantastic unit history, one of the best I've read. Jones does a masterful job of blending the specific history of the Brigades with the higher level military context, without bogging down in details that do not directly concern his subject. "Brigades" plural, because there were two distinct units that fought in entirely different divisions of the Army of Northern Virginia, and at different places in the battles. Jones does an excellent job of distinguishing the brigades without confusion, ending in their sad consolidation during the attrition of the Overland Campaign in 1864. The soldiers of the Louisiana Tigers, from the commanders to the privates, come to life and we become attached to them through the book. The loss of individuals who we have come to know is saddening; the mark of a great unit history.… (plus d'informations)

This well written book flows smoothly as Seymour's memoirs relate the travails of the Louisiana Tiger Brigade of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 through October 1864. William J. Seymour ran his father's newspaper in New Orleans prior to entering the service. His writing skill is reflected in his memoirs. Seymour wrote his memoirs based on journals he kept while serving as an officer with the Louisiana Volunteers. He was able to see the war from the view of both an aide to staff officers and an officer of the line. He relates his experiences during the war from its mundane repetition to its worst horrors.… (plus d'informations)
