I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review from Lovers of the Paranormal:

I was on a train for five hours on Tuesday and five hours today so I read a lot. The prologue was excellent, very well done and full of menace. The two arsonists arguing over killing children, quite chilling. I sped through the prologue and stopped at the first line of chapter one 'It was a beautiful day' For a moment, I wondered what had happened, it was as though someone had jabbed an ice cube down my back, it was that jarring and I felt my expectations crumble. But I persevered and entered an intriguing tale about magic and politics and girls with swords and/or magic.

The main character was interesting but her romance was not.. I found Caleb interesting but again, the romance was not. It felt that they had to put the male and female protagonists together because they wanted a romance and not because they had chemistry. It felt bland and Caleb came across as controlling. I think both characters should have been love interests for other people, because they didn't work as a couple for me.

The world building did not fully gel either. I couldn't quite see the world as the author saw it.

Despite the above however, it had a great deal of promise and I will read the second book in the series.

Two stars for "it was ok" (read: not bad, just not my cup of tea). I think I would have enjoyed it more if I were a little younger and more inclined toward romance. I enjoy YA fiction usually, but I think this one was a little too sweet for me. I would have liked to see more tension in the love story because it just felt a little too easy for the young lovers and thus, I was not really invested in their relationship. The idea of the amulets was pretty interesting, but it felt like it took a backseat to the love story and I would have liked to read more about them and their history and less conversation about the love interest. I think this would be a good read for teen or pre-teen girls who enjoy a romantic story.

I received a copy of this novel as a Goodreads giveaway.

In this book Ms Johnson has taken the vampire genre and adapted it to her own style. It is at the same time an adventure, love, fantasy and faith story. It has something for everyone and while listed as a YA book it can be read by almost anyone over 16 as there are some elements of sex in it but they are tastefully done.. And while it was not one that you pick up and can't put down, I was able to leave the book for short periods of time to do things like eat and sleep, it was one that I returned to as soon as I could and I will be doing my best to read the other books in the series now or when they come out.… (plus d'informations)
