Courte biographie
Anne Marie Jauss was born in Munich, Germany, a daughter of Georg Jauss, a painter, and his wife Caroline. She attended schools in Munich, Meran and Stuttgart. She studied briefly at the National School of Applied Arts in Munich, but was mostly self-taught as an artist. In the early 1930s, her work was exhibited in Munich and Berlin, and articles about her appeared in German newspapers and journals. As a pacifist, she fled the rise of the Nazi regime and went into exile in Portugal. There she worked as a painter, illustrator, interior architect, designer, and ceramic artist. She helped German friends, many of Jewish descent, to obtain passage to the USA or other countries.

In 1946 she emigrated to the USA herself, and became a member of a circle of German intellectual émigrés. She exhibited her works in Long Island, and Philadelphia, and several of her etchings were acquired by the New York Public Library. She began a new career as a book illustration and illustrated about 70 books, mostly for children. She also wrote and illustrated several books on nature and animals.
In 1962, she built a house in Stockholm, northern New Jersey where she lived for many years. From the mid-1970s, she painted watercolors of landscapes, still life, houses, animals and plants. Her best-known book was Under a Green Roof (1960).
