The material is great, but huge swaths of the 2005 paperback reprint have been completely re-typeset and just look wrong.

A lovely holiday go-to that rewards each additional viewing with subtle details. For example, when someone steals Neal's taxi at the beginning, there's a quick close-up on a shower ring floating in a puddle. The end goes just a little over-the-top with its heartwarmingness, but by then the comedy's been witty and biting enough to make up for it.

The classic story of a teenage boy who takes an unauthorised day off school and gets involved in increasingly risky behaviour. Some slapstick, some situational humour, and some tension as we wonder how long it will take them to be 'caught'. Some poignancy, too.

Different from most of the films we see, but very well done and recommended to older teens and adults.

A prime example of 1980s Hollywood, with violence and cruelty masquerading as comic farce. The premise and scattered moments of clarity between characters (not particularly in character, based on the caricature that came before) offer a glimpse into what distinguishes a John Hughes film from the rest.

A girl's family forgets her birthday.

2/4 (Indifferent).

The core romance is pretty good. The racism, assault, and rape take up more screen time.

(Mar. 2022)½

Two strangers try to get to Chicago by Thanksgiving.

I finally know where that quote comes from... :)

Director's first end should have been better.

Beste moment:
Als zij aan het eind haar vader gebaart dat dit de jongen is waar zij hem toch over verteld heeft en ze daarom meegaat in de rode sportauto en niet naar de receptie van de bruiloft van haar zus.

Best moment:
When she gestures to her father at the end that this is the boy she told him about and that is why she gets in the red sports car and won't attend her sister's wedding reception.

A conversation between some of my younger co-workers recently got me to thinking about this quintessential 80s-era “brat pack” classic. Written and directed by John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes Trains and Automobiles and many more), The Breakfast Club is the ultimate for navel-gazing teens. Four high school students are forced to attend an all-Saturday detention day, overseen by their overbearing principal. The teens come from drastically different backgrounds — The Jock (Emilio Estevez), The Princess (Molly Ringwald), The Brain (Anthony Michael Hall), The Criminal (Judd Nelson) and The Basketcase (Ally Sheedy), but over the course of a morning and afternoon spent verbally sparring, then sharing, with each other, they each come to a better understanding of the complications that anyone’s life can have. This film should be required viewing for any student of the 1980s, and features terrific performances from a very talented young cast. Molly, Judd and Ally, in particular, stand out, as does Paul Gleason as Mr. Vernon. What, on the surface, appears to be a very lightweight film, actually carries considerable heft. I was impressed, and still am, even though it’s been almost 30 years since it was released. Also features an iconic musical soundtrack as background to the drama. This specific “Flashback” DVD version features a 12-part documentary, in which cast members look back at the making of the film, and others in the entertainment business reflect on The Breakfast Club’s cultural impact, as well as feature commentary by Judd Nelson and Anthony Michael Hall, and a mini-documentary on the origins of the “Brat Pack” of 80’s actors.

Five kids of different stereotypes spend the day together in detention.

My John Hughes experience was previously limited to Ferris Bueller and Home Alone, so this was not at all what I expected - quite a pleasant surprise.

Three teenagers skip school for the day.

It's weird that this movie is as entertaining as it is. It's a comedy without any exceptionally funny jokes. Most of its charm relies on Matthew Broderick, who is usually a charisma vacuum. The most important couple of scenes are played as serious drama, while the rest of the movie is cartoonish. But somehow it all manages to come together.

A boy left home alone thwarts burglars.

Every now and then there'll be something amusing (like John Candy) - just often enough to emphasize how bad the rest of the movie is.

Not interested in the wanna-be sexual escapades of teen-agers. Foul language also turned me off. Could see why some people like it though. Didn't like those guys in high school when I was there; no interest in watching them now.½

Like other National Lampoon parodies of that period (and the magazine itself) the humor is hit-and-miss. But the best parts, such as the ad for professional wrestling, are hysterical.½

I love this movie. It is one of my favorites. When Lenox Mall in Atlanta I saw it, then took several people back, and I still enjoy the video. I especially enjoy the music, especially the main theme that is repeated throughout the film. My favorite humor scene is when the mother takes the phone away from a lady in the Paris airport and tells the person on the line "She'll get back to you" or something like this. There are so many great funny moments. A real treasure.

Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister makes the most of the situation after his family unwittingly leaves him behind when they go on Christmas vacation. But when a pair of bungling burglars set their sights on Kevin's house, the plucky kid stands ready to defend his territory. By planting booby traps galore, adorably mischievous Kevin stands his ground as his frantic mother attempts to race home before Christmas Day.

Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal. The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently -- and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.
