Hobhouse is sui generis. Her jacket photo is dreadful but in person she's alive and strangely brilliant. This book is about color and rivals any on my shelves.
Found some papers in the back that do not belong. From whence came they.
Also, this is a gift from the Mainguys. I gave them one in French - which was sold to me by mistake at conference San Fransisco. They returned the favor w this.

I read this book as a narrative of more than the history of gardens, but more interestingly a history of the human relationship with some of the aspects of the botanical world that we most treasure. In this respects its an absolute goldmine, combining beautiful imagery with historical background.

A great way to gaze at gardens...almost like being there.

A reference book providing historical background and cultural contexts to great gardens around the world throughout history. With chapters such as : "In the beginning: the origins of Gardening" -- "A time of change : form naturalism to Modernism. 1870-1950". A socio-cultural history look through gardens.

Focuses on using flowers to create palettes of colour and use of flowering plants in bringing designs to life. Lots of photos to illustrate principles discussed, some case studies of gardens and the final section is an A-Z of flowering plants.

Photographs, plans and planting plans for Penelope Hobhouse's garden at Tintinhull. Lavishly illustrated with gorgeous photos.

Beautiful photos of gardens to lust after, but not particularly useful in a practical sense for the average gardener who doesn't have a multi-acre estate.

This would be my favorite gardening book for the gorgeous photos alone, but it also offers lots of good information about the plants and how to combine colors in the garden. It's not just about the colors of flowers, though there is plenty of that. Leaf colors and bark colors are also discussed. Hobhouse is a British gardening expert, so the plant choices are very suitable for the U.S. Northwest, where I live.

Penelope Hobhouse is a renowned authority on historic gardens and garden design, and an acknowledged gardener and plantswoman. In this book she brings all her knowledge together to cover the complex subject of where plants have come from over the centuries, how we use them and how they have influenced the design of our gardens, our garden tools, and our ideas of what a garden should be. An absolutely fascinating, beautifully illustrated book.
