Excellent story, relatable characters, and a great ending. Each family member had tough (and painful) challenge…their arcs tied up nicely together —a family that prays together stays together. I listened to the audio book version that was narrated by the author, and she did an excellent read.

The epiphany of an American girl, generations removed from the homeland of her paternal ancestors, who spends a year [1993-1994] in the newly independent Slovak Republic, balancing between being an Americanka and a Slovenka and discovering in the end that perhaps she is neither.

A rollicking personal memoir dealing with coming of age angst, teen age love, theology, gender roles, cuisine, folklore, mythology, history, politics, linguistics, ethnic identity and national self determination.

Intelligent, hilarious, perceptive and entertaining with fascinating insights into the re-emergence of a nation in post-soviet Eastern Europe. All of this is capped off with an appendix of Slovak culinary delights.
