a simply brilliant book. Not the usual art historian vapourings, but incisive, perceptive discussion of how painting worked, and how it was perceived by the painters at the time. Hill knows what pigments and binders were available and how they were used, and also understands the medieval and Renaissance mindset enough to bend your brain and get you to understand it as well.

This is a great book! Easy to read and richly illustrated. Contains a lot of useful information for all levels of scholarship. This book has been helpful during several of my research projects.
