A collection of pictures taken by photojournalist Ron Haviv in the former Yugoslavia, from 1991-99, chronicling the human toll of the various wars in that region. Many of the images in this book are deeply disturbing, from the photographs of emaciated camp inmates to the picture of a Serbian soldier casually kicking the dead body of a recently murdered Muslim woman. Less graphic, but just as chilling, are the many photographs of civilians attempting to conduct their daily lives in the face of the increasingly militarized and brutalized world around them. A moving, and very necessary visual documentation of some of the atrocious human rights violations that characterized the Balkan conflicts, in which the majority of victims were non-combatants.

Chuck Sudetic and David Rieff each contributed brief introductory essays, detailing the history of the region and the artistry of the photographer, respectively. But the book is mainly given over to Haviv's photographs, which have appeared in publications such as Newsweek and Paris Match, and which were part of an exhibition that toured the U.S. and Europe in 2000.
