This is a picture book about disappointment that both my 7- and 4-year old could relate to and understand. I appreciated the examples and the diversity of the children in the illustrations. After defining disappointment, the author discusses how disappointment can make us feel, and then gives concrete suggestions for dealing with these emotions to avoid becoming stuck in them. At the end are some activities and tips for parents and teachers. I will definitely look for more books in this series.

This is a highly practical guide to learning about your emotions and ways to avoid thinking habits that trap you. This guide describes why we have emotions, ways of thinking about specific emotions, and how to improve your emotional and social health. Instead of titling this book emotional intelligence, I would have called it something like "emotional healthiness" (don't hire me to title your books). The foundation of emotional health is listening to emotional messages and understanding that your reaction to them can be natural and involuntary, but other reactions are voluntary. Your voluntary choices can help you live a more fulfilling life.

Much like how knowing about good posture helps your body, this guide is like a posture guide for your mind and provides cues to avoid "repetitive stress injuries". I highly recommend this to anyone. I thought I was emotionally healthy before reading this book, but there were plenty of habits I recognized after reading that could use some work.

There aren't any strong negatives I can think of for this book. If I were really picky, I would say that some chapters are a bit redundant, but even so they are brought up in the new context of each section: understanding emotions, managing emotions, developing emotionally, developing socially. I am also aware that this book has a particular bias about what constitutes a "productive" response to emotions and that people may (and will) disagree. Nonetheless, the author's intention is clearly to help create more personal and social harmony, so think critically and you'll be fine.

In my humble opinion, this book only lacked two things; Emotion and Intelligence.

I know that the modern ethos is that everyone can be the same, we can all be the World's greatest salesperson but, do we really all want to be clones? Our emotions are not at the beck and call of logic and maybe, just maybe, we will be a better civilisation when we recognise this.

We seem to feel the need to label, and then correct, every trait that does not dovetail with our own. I was recently reading a biographical article about John Ogdon, arguably Britain's best ever pianist, in which the great man, known in his time as a flawed genius, was referred to as, autistic. I am no doctor and so, would not feel in a position to challenge this 'diagnosis', but perhaps we spend too long looking at people's perceived faults and issuing corrective advice. Perhaps Gill Hanson and her ilk could have sorted out Ogdon's emotional problems and the World would have had another ordinary bloke, rather than a great pianist. Personally, I rejoice in my flawed emotions: I just wish I could play the piano, paint, write coherently.... ANYTHING!!!!!… (plus d'informations)
