A new take on an old religious idea that challenges Cartesian thinking. Directly applicable to modern environmental conceptions and attitudes. Harvey is a consummate scholar and very well-rounded, but like many sociological/anthropological books, it is a bit of a dry read....it ain't Harry Potter.

The bulk of the essays are historical looks at the major British pagan "pathways": Odinists, Druids, Wiccans, the Left-Hand Path, women's spirituality movements, shamanism, sacred ecology and the new age. Having been originally published in 1995, much of this information is only of historical interest and probably doesn't say much about contemporary practices. A few of the other articles are so densely academic as to be unreadable. Still Ronald Hutton's article was lucid, and as always, worth reading. In addition I enjoyed the study of solitary vs. group practitioners and the analysis of the role of women in various types of neo-pagan groups.… (plus d'informations)

A good academic book over certain definitions and terminology found within and around the topic and phenomena of shamanism. Some of the entries are contemporary terms, others are actual names of people who are ’famous’ because of their work around the subject, while other entries are of people or practices, and so on. A fairly cut-and dry book but still a good read for knowledge sake.
