For those already familiar with the fascinating topic of the Hawaiian Revolution and the still-ongoing differences of opinion regarding the various forces involved, this book will surprise in its entirely even-handed treatment of the varying points of view, given voice by an engaging collection of colorful characters, fictional and historic.

The idealistic young protagonist, Christopher Jones, and his beautiful and manipulative love interest, Lydia, have an on-again, off-again, on again relationship that takes them from Seattle to Hawaii to Washington DC and Chicago, involved with the principal players on all sides of the revolution and, of course, each other.

The dialogue sparkles, the prose is witty, warm, and memorable, and the parties to the revolution are treated with respect. It is a rare historical novel that doesn't suffer from axe-grinding, and Mr. Hanson has illuminated this bit of history with characters that are entirely three-dimensional, passionate, and committed. Highly recommended.
