Pamela Haag has a Ph.D. in history from Yale and has held several fellowships. She has been published in the American Scholar, Christian Science Monitor, and Huffington Post, and has been heard on NPR and elsewhere. She also writes a twice-weekly column for Big Think magazine.

Fascination look at the gun culture from the beginning

Leading up to my wedding I read through a few "things to know before you get married" type books. I should have just read this one. It's not a particularly amazing book or anything, but it's got the down and dirty on middle class marriage malaise. Much has been made of Haag's "rebel couples" who are in sexually open marriages, but that is not something I can ever imagine being okay with. I was, however, very interested in the counterculture couples who chose to be nonchalant parents or downwardly mobile.… (plus d'informations)

A deeply researched history of the American gun manufacturing industry and its development from the early national period through roughly the 1920s, with a particular focus on the Winchester firm. Disturbing, in many ways, but a fascinating read.

Pamela Haag's "The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of American Gun Culture" was not what I expected; and that is a good thing.

"Gunning of America" puts aside all of the politics, the protests, and the Second Amendment, it calls out what has created the American Gun Culture: the American Gun Industry. This is an "exceptional" American history book that reads like a lucid yet complex novel.

It is important to note the juxtaposition of one of the original gun industry leaders, Oliver Winchester, and the true story of his daughter-in-law, Sarah Winchester; the latter of which was "haunted by what she considered a vast blood fortune, and became convinced that the ghosts of rifle victims were haunting her."
