A unique offering of some of the history of devices, as Mr. Gwynn-Jones was the person primarily responsible for awarding new devices in England for 15 years. This book has some interesting discussion on the history and evolution of creatures depicted on crests. It also shows some rather new livery designs awarded in the last 50 years, and shows some of the extraneous artwork involved in that process. The author is also the designer of some of these.
There is a chapter devoted to mythical beasts which goes far beyond any other listing I've seen, with many randomly frankinsteinish beasts and unpronouncable names.
I learned a bit more about the history of supporters, too, which has been a recent focus for me.
