Lawrence Kugelmass Grossman was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 21, 1931. He received bachelor's degrees in English and political science from Columbia University. He spent one year at Harvard Law School before getting a job in the promotions department of Look magazine. In the mid-1950s, he did afficher plus advertising and promotion for the CBS news division. From 1962 to 1966, he was a vice president of advertising for NBC. He left to open an advertising, marketing, and communications firm. In 1976, he was hired as the president of PBS. He left in 1983 to head NBC News. He was forced out in 1988. His book, The Electronic Republic: Reshaping Democracy in the Information Age, was published in 1995.
