This book was so much more than I anticipated. I THOUGHT I was going to read a police procedural that just happened to take place on a Navajo Reservation. What I got was that but it wrapped around friends, family, and neighbors creating a loving strong bond and faith few people are ever able to grasp. The Navajo grasp it and are it. My heart feels steady because the people are steady but my mind is sad because of how much our current world is missing out on with such a strong bond. A wonderful read.… (plus d'informations)

Wonderful, in every sense

I’ve just read this for the second time. It is an enthralling story, told by three individuals - Navajo tribal policeman Ben, nurse Caroline, and doctor Owen - whose lives become inextricably linked. The background of life on “the rez” is beautifully drawn, helping the reader understand something of the culture and mindset of the Navajo.

The roots of the story go back years - to the loss of Ben’s younger sister and the betrayal of a close friend - and include a startling instance of tribal law. These events fractured Ben’s family and still cause him to be despised and distrusted by many on the rez and even by some of his colleagues. On this foundation is built a richly complex and moving novel combining Navajo mythology with modern supernatural fantasy.

Very highly recommended.

Absolutely wonderful. Quality writing. Quality characters. Great story

From the blub: "Three strangers whose lives are mysteriously entwined with the supernatural must face malicious forces that threaten a Navajo Reservation — and walk the line between the living and the dead. An epic box set that blends Navajo mythology with Southwestern mystery!"

This is an amazing series. I was drawn to the description because of the Navaho themes and background, which I always enjoyed in Tony Hillerman’s books. Incidentally, I came away feeling that this author understands Navaho culture and mythology as well as Hillerman.

Griffith’s writing is superb. The books are written in the first person by three or four different narrators and in the present tense - something that I have not seen done successfully before, but which is pulled off here so well that you quickly forget the unusual format and are drawn deep into the lives of the characters. These are finely drawn with distinct voices - especially Grant, the young boy who comes into the story in the second book, and matures to difficult teen in the third.

I don’t want to add any details about the plot to what is given in the blurb for each book as I don’t want to introduce spoilers. Just take my word for it, it’s unique. It’s thrilling, surprising, shocking, wonderful, moving. I read the last few chapters through brimming eyes. And it wasn’t because I was reaching the end of the book.

Read it. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
