Meet Jillian James and her search for her place in the fifth-grade hierarchy and the world. A true testament to the power of humor to overcome the angst of adolescence. Told in diary format, this novel from Australia comes complete with glossary.

How I Hide My Pain

Dr Angela Morrison never expected her decision to facilitate a women’s meeting at the church to change her life. As she learned more about the four women and their history of pain, she found that there were some buried pains from her past she too must come to grips with.

Anita Harrison is fighting to maintain her preacher’s wife image. She’s hiding from a life that would make her happy, but bring her family shame, and fighting to stay alive under the abusive hand of the good pastor.

Ernestine Johnson is a survivor and through the abuse she must learn to love herself.

Toni Brown is determined to exact revenge on the men who imprisoned, abused and gave her a life sentence.

Candace Carter has been abused for as long as she can remember, seeking refuge in a man she thought loved her has her locked into a world of prostitution and pornography.

The stories of these five women grabbed me from the beginning and kept me enthralled to the last page. “He Beat Past My Skin” touches on abuse in all different forms against women from all different lifestyles. Jessica Green took the time to develop each story and moved through each of the women’s past and present life in an entertaining way. The stories felt so real that I could not help but read each page knowing there are women who go though such horrors everyday of their life. I would recommend this book to book clubs, to young at risk girls and to anyone looking to read an emotional, well written novel. I warn that the emotional level of this book is high and I say grab a tissue, sit back and enjoy this heart breaking and enlightening story.
