Was using Linux/Ubuntu on a personal computer, which crashed in 2016 or 2017. Probably consulted it, but not in any great detail.

This would have been useful for me when I was setting up my ubuntu machine but at this stage some of the advice is dated (the edition I was looking at was for Hardy Heron, version 8.04 and I have kept my machine updated to date.

Some of the advice still holds for tweaking some of the settings but much of it is out of date.

Interesting, but in a historical rather than a useful way. A lot of info on the backend of Linux - a lot of setup tasks that are now largely automated (I think - I've only installed one Linux distro!). Good writer, but some of his concerns are basically out of date now. He assumes most people are on dialup, for instance - there still are plenty of people on dialup but it's not the default any more. Mozilla (an advance on Netscape!) is his browser of choice, though it doesn't work with lot of sites (he says). And like that. I enjoyed reading it, but was contantly reminded of things like setting extended vs expanded memory, back in DOS and early Windows days. It's amazing how fast things change…… (plus d'informations)

A good book for the newcomer, arranged in a topical fashion with clear how-to descriptions for the kinds of tasks a new user will be doing.
