I read this some time ago so don't recall details. It's a good, straightforward book, written clearly, with details.

An eye opening expose! I shook my head in disbelief/outrage throughout this book. I wanted to read this as I have seen Amy on TV. She goes right to the truth of all the corruption and media failures in this country. The lies and silence on issues this country faces- and not just with the Bush administration but in how the citizens are brainwashed by the government and it's friend the media. We are as bad as my view of Russia.

as always, amy goodman does not disappoint. the essays are short and it's easy to read one right after the other, as well and read it in stolen moments throughout the day. i wish more people would read amy goodman's books and listen to democracy now.

First, this book is a perfect airplane read because it's a collection of Goodman's columns from about 2007 onward - easy to read a bit and then negotiate with your neighbor for elbow room. Secondly, as I've not had an opportunity to hear or read Goodman's work previously, I was thoroughly engaged by the breadth of her news coverage and her wit in challenging - well, those who need to be challenged. She's smart, she's level-headed, she's courageous in her commitment to speaking truth to power. I'll be sure to read more.½

I like this book because it's quick to read, easy to read, fun to read, and informative. Not many books can capture my interest like this one did.

Amy Goodman is my hero. Exception to the Rulers is a damning expose of the corporate media establishment, oil corporations, and American politics. Amy sheds light on the way in which the United States becomes complicit in global horrors through weapons trades, oil exploitation, and the pursuit of corporate interests at the expense of human lives. Her most damning critiques are reserved for the media establishment, and journalists who refuse to ask difficult questions of those in power. Instead, the mainstream media publishes whatever the government feeds it, allowing the so-called independent press to become a tool for government propaganda. My only criticism would be that her tone gets a bit snarky at times, which probably discourages people who are not already convinced leftists from reading it. But it is an informative and important book, even if it is only being used by the choir.

I expected a work of great depth. I expected Amy Goodman's show Democracy Now! in print form. It seems strange to me how this medium, which allows for greater depth and more reasoned analysis than does a daily tv/radio show, was used instead to offer up a strained, condensed version centered around what is probably Goodman's signature topic - the failings of the embedded media both within the USA and outside it.

It may not be fair to judge a book against the output of another format. It may be a case of the focus being to reach those who would not typically listen to Democracy Now. Regardless, I find this book to be a disappointment.
