Columnist Bernard Gladstone was born in Brooklyn, New York on Nov. 26, 1921. At the age of 16, he wrote his first article for Popular Science. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in England. After the war, he formed his own paint contracting and retail business in Long Island, New afficher plus York. In 1955, he became a freelance columnist for The New York Times. He became a copy editor in 1970 and eventually edited the paper's home-improvement coverage until his retirement in 1987. He continued to write columns for The New York Times Syndicate until 1991. He also wrote over 20 home repair books including The Complete Manual of Home Repair (1969). The Home Hardware Handbook: An Illustrated User's… par Mother Earth News

Not just a how-to book, but a tribute to the beauty of tools used in home building and repair. Wonderful photographs of planes and squares, line drawing of the kinds of nails. of the "3 essential power tools" the authors warn "Start a collection but beware the obsession." Even a warning chapter on the fire extinguisher. The book concludes with diagrams for furniture. No wonder there are 3 people wanting the book on current "swap" sites.
