Mostly an illustrated book this is a traditional and therefore an authentic view of American colonial history.

Quite a surprise to read some of the stories included here...Carl Schurz of Germany, who escaped execution by the Prussian Army, emigrated and who, it is said, did more than any other one man to help Lincoln be elected. The Northern Cheyenne who fled a reservation in Oklahoma, determined to return to their home in the Black Hills of South Dakota...or die trying, and many of them did die...this was in 1878, when Carl Schurz was Secretary of the Interior. "He did not see the similarity between the Indians' flight from their prison-like reservations and his own escape to freedom thirty years before." Other famous journeys include those by Harriet Tubman, the men who brought reindeer to the Alaskan Arctic, and Marcus and Narcissa Whitman's trip to Oregon.
