Lady Charlotte is in London while Edwin has to deal with the five daughters from two marriages. Charlotte summons Victoria to London to make her society debut while still racking up a lot of expenses. Victoria turns to Jane Haydon (still mourning her lost love) for a dress and they find a secret hidden in some silk, which they make into a court dress. Jane was planning to make it into her wedding dress but this is an opportunity too good to turn down for her struggling business.
Meanwhile Beatrice is trying to become a nurse under Florence Nightingale and Louisa is waiting for news about her betrothed, off in the Crimea.

Twisty lives and interesting characters I'm curious how this story will finish.

This is the story of a family who have a curse hanging over their heads (and honestly for a long while that curse appeared to be the stepmother who is more involved with herself and perception of her by others) and a corset maker who is finding her feet and love along the way. This story doesn't really contain a romance per say, there is a promise of romance in the book but no real "happy for now" or "happy ever after", partially because one of the relationships involves someone off in the Crimean war, so we have no idea what's going to happen there.
Still I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Some quite good parts - have to confess I skipped quite a large chunk of the first third as it was wholly predictable and moany and groany. Could have done with some serious editing. An interesting story though and gives an insight into millinery, dressmaking and dyeing using natural dyes - also life.
