Courte biographie
Field was an employee and friend of William Randolf Hearst. Ned became the secretary, protegee and possibly lover of Fanny Stevenson (who was 38 years older), after the death of her husband Robert Louis Stevenson. After Fanny's death in 1914, Ned married her daughter Isobel Osbourne, who was 20 years his senior. Field became a successful Southern California real estate developer. In the 1920s oil was discovered on some of his property which made them wealthy. In 1926 Field purchased Zaca Lake and surrounding land in the Figueroa Mountains near Los Olivos, California. His wife Isobel built an artists studio there and the Field home became a popular meeting place for writers and actors

Field was not a great or important writer. His few romance contributions are cute, but this one really suffers from a lack of substance. His personal life explains why his books got such princely attention from the publisher. He was good friends with William Randolph Hurst. In the 1920s oil was discovered on some of his property which made him wealthy. He was associated with the film business, writing several popular screenplays.
The bit about becoming wealthy by a fluke does tie in nicely with this story, redeeming it somewhat.
The binding and decorations are lovely, as always with his books.

This book is just fluff. I'm disappointed that it lacks the wit of the author's other books. The characters are not particularly engaging or well-drawn. Nice illustrations.

Field does a masterly job of incorporating the theme into all parts of the story. Every aspect of the descriptions and characterizations point to the celebration of the motor car. Many laugh out loud passages.

It's the usual story: boy meets girl, girl pretends to mistake boy for a detective and makes up a story about losing a bracelet she's admired on someone else, boy plays along, pretends to be taken in, secures the bracelet and sends it to girl, hilarity ensues. There's a lot of witty banter and turning of tables before the inevitable romantic conclusion.

It's a fun read, but I actually bought it because of the book design; Google has a scan -- take a look and try to imagine it printed in black and green.… (plus d'informations)
