Marc Fiddian has written myriad books on a wide range of topics, many of which fill niche gaps in Australian history knowledge. So near, so far: Australians in Test cricket's shadow is one such book; highlighting those players who perhaps should have played cricket for Australia but for whatever reason, didn’t. You can argue with Fiddian’s choices or omissions and wonder what might have been.

Fiddian has written at least 38 books about VFA, VFL or AFL football and has worked as a journalist covering sport in Melbourne for many years. This book is a collection of essays and observations about various aspects of VFL and AFL football. Many of the pieces examine particular clubs, seasons or periods in a club’s history. Other pieces are biographical portraits of some major figures in VFL football, some of which are based on Fiddian’s own interviews. Some notable interviewees were John Coleman, Norman Ware and Jack Regan.
