Montserrat is a small island in the Caribbean, a British territory of less than 10 000 people, so the bar for determining prominent isn't impossibly high. The most well known entry to me (indeed the only Montserratian I could name prior to reading Gallery Montserrat) is cricketer Jim Allen, the only World Series Cricket West Indian not to play Test cricket but we also get entries on political leaders and unionists, teachers, health workers, playwrights and plantation workers. And we shouldn't forget the St Patrick's Day Martyrs, those slaves that led an unsuccessful and bloodily put down uprising back in the eighteenth century.

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit was that for many years any lime-based Schweppes drinks I had growing up in Australia were limes sourced from Montserrat. Cheers!

The writings of Lasana M. Sekou have been compared to the works of a range of poets, from Aimé Césaire to Oswald Mtshali, from Kamau Brathwaite to Dylan Thomas, from E.E. Cummings to Linton Kwesi Johnson, but Fergus insists that “the voice that reaches us is sui generis, unique and Sekouesque.” Fergus throws wide ajar the doors to enter into Sekou’s poetics with authority and anticipation.
