Gr 8 Up—Feder manages the near impossible—a memoir about joining "the Dead Moms Club" that's palpable in its
depiction of grief yet also exuberant, uplifting, and funny. Using a pastel-infused palette and creatively placed lists,
asides, and diagrams, she lovingly remembers her mother, explores the less talked about aspects of loss, and offers
a balm to anyone confronting the death of a parent.

Opal the ostrich has anxiety ("the noodles"). Her family offers many kinds of help, from encouragement to hugs to cheer-up silly jokes, but ultimately Opal has to tackle hard things and prove to herself that she can do it. In this case, it's picking up a tart from a bakery for a family gathering. She immediately assumes that everyone she meets along the way is mad at her, but when she talks to them, they all have completely reasonable explanations ("I'm not mad! I'm just nocturnal!"). Throughout, a small chameleon continues to try to get Opal's attention, waving hello, but she doesn't see.… (plus d'informations)

This is a great book for parents of curious young minds looking to supplement an honest exploration of all the different types of bodies that exist, and how each one has its own special gift.
