Mountstuart Elphinstone was a Scottish statesman and historian, associated with the government of British India. He later became the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) where he is credited with the opening of several educational institutions accessible to the Indian population. Besides being a noted administrator, he wrote books on India and Afghanistan. [Wikipedia]

Critiques

When I wrote a retrospective review of this book for the Far Eastern Economic Review back in 1981 (see below), I did this to point out how Elphinstone's early 19th century account foreshadowed the problems that the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan would face. Little did I anticipate how Elphinstone's book would also foreshadow the problems that the American-led intervention there would subsequently encounter. To understand Afghanistan, this book is a must-read.
