Wow, what a good book. Part 1 of an overall story that is spread over several books. A lot to take in with a lot of characters, including their relationship to each other in English society. Espionage, murder and people with special skills, all endearing in their own way. An especially dark threat to be out maneuvered for them and their country. Keeps you on your toes every moment. Very entertaining. Unconventional people who are quite real. I highly recommend this - you won't be bored!

I received this book free from the author and publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Alethea Sutherton is a violinist who is constrained by society's disapproval of ladies playing instruments to a public audience; which echoes the whole being in a trade rather than idle rich issue, she admires Lord Dominick and his compositions but his past haunts him and he doesn't see a way to have a woman in his life because sometimes his nightmares are a problem. Alethea's violin is a beauty and rare and there are those who want it and are willing to go to some extreme lengths to get it. Dominick is willing to try to help her and falling for her isn't what he wants, she wants independence, to be able to move away from England and it's constraints but she can't see a path to that.

It was a good read. There was a bit of letting the Lord steer the path to a good future but nothing too much.

Half a star off because this short book starts off with a sketch of a teenager at a party, trying to convince a boy that he's her True Love, and then suddenly veers off into its real purpose of showing us how Solomon Drydale and Laura Wynwood got into the private social club of people determined to fight crime in pre-police Regency England. The party was disrupted by the theft of the valuable diamond the host was celebrating having acquired. We're shown whodunit and how Sol, Lady Wynwood, and some younger friends use love and prayer to solve the crime. It's a good concept and a good story, and maybe we'll find out what happens to the original point-of-view character in one of the longer books in the series.

Despite a few minor anachronisms, like the word "weekend," this is a delightful concept for a delectable series of whimsically romantic adventure stories. People who miss Joan Aiken will probably enjoy Lady Wynwood's Spies.

The spinster, Lady Wynwood, finds herself in a position to help two young family friends at one holiday house party. Some of the family want to send Miranda, a poor orphan, to stay with an uncle who is likely to molest her; Miranda appeals to Lady Wynwood and to Gerard for help gettng to the city and finding work as a nurserymaid instead. In the next few days Gerard, a wounded veteran, realizes that he's physically and financially capable of supporting Miranda, but will his parents accept her as fit to marry him? The story is about as believable as the usual Regency Romance, where the rule is that if a thing has been known to happen one time in a thousand it's about as probable as most of the real history of this period was. The characters are more likable than Regency Romance characters are usually made by modern authors or, for that matter, than writers of the Regency period usually made themselves seem to be.… (plus d'informations)
