- Gretel Ehrlich was born on a horse ranch near Santa Barbara, California. She worked in film for ten years, then began writing fulltime in 1978 after the death of a loved one. She had been filming on a 250,000 acre sheep and cattle ranch in northern Wyoming at the time, and there she stayed. 1991 was the year Ehrlich was hit by lightning while taking a walk on her ranch. She was hospitalized and severly debilitated for several years. Having recovered from her lightning injuries, Ehrlich began traveling. In 1993, she went to the foothills of the Himalayas in western China. Intending to write a book on the four sacred Buddhist in China, she was so appalled by the stripping away of culture and humanity during the Cultural Revolution, that she found herself writing something altogether different. That same year, Ehrlich also began traveling north to Greenland. “I wanted to get above treeline, to see nothing but horizons. Once there, she fell in love with the Inuit people and traveled with subsistence hunters by dogsled for months at a time out on the sea ice.

Albin Michel. — Gretel Ehrlich ne se doutait pas qu’en débarquant au Groenland, elle allait tomber follement amoureuse de ce pays de glace, de roc, de lutte mais aussi de rires incomparables. Elle était d’abord venue pour des raisons de santé, comme on s’en va vivre en altitude - pas un arbre ne pousse ici, “c’est comme une haute montagne couchée” et cela l’attirait. Mais personne n’aurait pu lui faire croire que vingt ans plus tard, elle serait toujours là, quasiment groenlandaise elle-même - et que, des quatre saisons de la plus grande île du monde (quatre mois de jour, quatre mois de nuit, séparés par deux bimestres crépusculaires), c’est la plus sombre et la plus froide qu’elle préfèrerait, quand les rires des Inuits restés libres de l’aculturation occidentale résonnent le plus vrai, dans le bleu translucide de la nuit ! Il faut préciser que cette Américaine hors norme s’est tout de suite choisi un guide exceptionnel : Rassmunsen, ou plutôt son esprit, puisque le héros national du Danemark, mélange de gentleman explorateur et de chef barbare réincarné, est mort un siècle plus tôt. C’est sur ses traces, munie de son extraordinaire journal de bord, que Gretel Ehrlich va vivre sa propre épopée groenlandaise. Le résultat est un livre de haute volée, comme on avait coutume d’en trouver dans la fameuse collection Terre Humaine de Jean Malaurie. (Patrice van EERSEL)
