Echo-Hawk's book is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in learning about federal Indian policy. He uses language which is easily understood and does an effective job weaving his own personal stories and experiences as a lawyer into the factual discussion of these ten court cases. I also recommend this to anyone who is already familiar with federal Indian law.

I started reading this book because it features stories and insights from some of my professional mentors (Bryant Rogers - I'm talking to you) and colleagues. Walter Echo-Hawk is an amazingly gifted writer but reading this at my already-too-late bedtime is simply not doable. At some point, when the boy is happily engaged in projects that will not require my attention and assistance, I will pick it up again to finish.
