What fun!

Zal and Zara have been betrothed since a young age, but they are determined not to marry. Now twelve, they do everything possible to avoid each other but their fathers see the great future of their families in the match.
Against this background they create a carpet to race in The Great Race of Azamed. Zal weaves the six colours together and Zara has the magic gift to make it fly.
The evil Shadow Society has other ideas though and when Haragan, Zara's arch rival, destroys the carpet, Zal and Zara work together to create another carpet against the clock.
There follow wonderful adventures in the depths of the earth and close fought battles against Haragan and his cronies.

It reads like a film script and has the charm of a Harry Potter book, which bodes well for Kit Downes. This tale of two children up against a sinister organisation in the preparation for a magic carpet race, is full of charm and likeable characters (and some clearly not-so likeable ones). The narrative is simply written, and paints a very clear picture of the events within, especially the race, which I expected to lose my engagement somewhat. The story contains far more than just the race, as it develops the characters and adds a little flavour to the city. An easy read, for younger readers as well as adults, offers a pleasant way to wile away a few hours.… (plus d'informations)
