Sometimes an impulsive decision is exactly what is needed – and Tom, despite the fact he is usually quite predictable, has made a big one after being let go. He decides to travel instead of looking for a new job – and returns to Venice. What he finds there is much more than he could have dreamed of… but that doesn’t mean things are easy.

Tom has spent five years working for a tech startup, rather than a larger, established company, so he is not exactly risk-averse. But going on a trip rather than job hunting is not a standard response to being terminated, no matter how you look at it. The man he meets and begins to fall for in Venice, Giovanni, is not exactly “standard” either, but he is at a very different point in his life and still feels tied down by responsibilities and a need to do what is right for his family restaurant.

Tom and Giovanni are dissimilar in other ways too: Tom is shy where Giovanni is outgoing and flirtatious. Tom enjoys his freedom and is ready for an adventure, but Giovanni feels obligated to do the right thing for his family. Amid the amazing setting of Venice and all the romantic situations that entails, Tom and Giovanni have to fight a very real internal battle between what they want and what they think is right. Add some miscommunication that is unavoidable between strangers with very different cultural backgrounds, and Tom and Giovanni’s budding relationship skirts disaster more than once.

If you like romances in exotic settings and want to find out more about Venice, if you enjoy watching two young men grapple with and decide what’s really important in their lives, and if you’re looking for a read that is as entertaining as it is full of passion, then you might like this novella.
