Highly recommended. Relates the history of the military horse and rider in service not as a retelling of battle narratives (although there are a few of those) but as descriptions of horse species and sub-species, breeding, training and equipment. Also describes how the military rider was trained and employed. There is much detail in the book I haven't seen related anywhere else, including in books specifically about cavalry. The only negative I would mention is that the battle descriptions are usually at too high a level to really add much to the understanding of specific cavalry issues.
