There is something very special about this intriguing novel. It’s the third installment in the Two Sparrows for a Penny series and though I haven’t had the chance to read the other two books I found myself completely immersed in this world, having to fight myself to put the book down, even for the moment. I read this entire novel in one sitting, spending a stormy afternoon keeping my literary appetite satiated.

Sara Davison is one of my favorite authors and this novel highlights why I love her so much. There is quite a bit of jumping back and forth from past and present, especially at the beginning, as we witness everything that transpired in real time. Normally the back and forth would get old or confusing but the writing was so seamless that it flowed as if it were all on one linear timeline, showing off Sara’s masterful writing skills.

The further you get into the story the more you unlock the secrets of Jae’s past, and they are heartbreaking. I cannot imagine a young girl having to endure so much and through no fault of her own. The mood of a sad mystery looms heavy over this work as Jae lives out the past while paralleling Tag’s unrelenting quest to find Jae and, with her, find the truth. The utter bravery of Jae is nothing short of heroic. To have such tenacity and faith in the face of evil is awe-inspiring and was truly inspiring to read.

There are some intense moments that literally had my heart pounding, so don’t let the clean suspense tag fool you. There are parts that were truly shocking commingled with moments of tenderness, and everything in between. You truly feel all the feels when you read this novel. It captured my imagination, my heart, and was exactly what I needed. I plan on going back and reading the other two novels in this series. If they are even a smidge as good as Every Bird That Falls, then I’m in for a treat.

Words are more powerful than we realize. They have the ability to tear us down or to build us up. They can wound us or heal us. They can bridge time, distance, and social status. They often reveal the status of our hearts. And in The Color of Sky and Stone, Sara Davison uses words to tell a story that encompasses how much words can affect us.

As Tane and Lia meet through letters, they (mostly) tear off their masks and share parts of themselves with each other that they hide from everyone else in their lives. But both of them are, in a way, leading double lives that, once exposed, may destroy the connection between them.

With a dose of danger in both our main characters’ lives, the breather the letters afford the reader are timed just right in this story. And I appreciated that Davison laid out who God is, how much He loves us no matter our past, and how He never leaves us so clearly throughout the book.

If you love suspense with a good helping of romance and faith, this book is for you.

Sara Davison has been one of my favorite authors for awhile thanks to her amazing storytelling and characters that tug at your heartstrings. The Color of Sky and Stone is the first novel in her new In the Shadows series, and she knocked it out of the park with this one. It’s clear that she poured her heart and soul into this one.

There can be such power in words, and this doesn’t ring truer than in the story of Tane and Lia, two lonely souls who find solace in one another through missives alone. At first, I felt like this story was going to be like all of the other romantic suspense novels I’ve read recently, but then there was a shift and I lost myself to the narrative. On the surface these two characters don’t seem like they would go together, yet they are more perfect for one another than meets the eye. Both have to hide behind a facade and not show who they truly are, both playing the parts that were given to them, and it takes these roles to meet someone who sees past the act and straight to the heart.

There is some suspense and moments that are electrifying beyond words. The connection between Tane and Lia is so powerful and palpable that you can feel it reverberating off the pages. Beautiful imagery helps paint a vivid picture as we see two souls traverse their lonely existence apart yet together, and the touch of grace and forgiveness is whispered and woven throughout.

Though there is a satisfying ending there are a few loose ends that need to be addressed, and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens. The Color of Sky and Stone is a very powerful story of two lonely hearts that find one another in the most unlikely way and discover what can happen when you truly let go and trust.

I can honestly say I've never read anything like The Watcher before. Written from the perspective of multiple characters, and complete with a mystery narrator, takes a simple yet complex story and adds a unique spin.

I have to admit, it took me a minute to get my bearings when I first started reading but once I knew whose mind I was in I was gold. From the first chapter you feel the emotional weight of this novel, and it does not let up until the very end. The entire time you fight to figure out who the mystery narrator is. There are hints throughout but all you really know is there is a being with Kathryn, the main character, as she deals both in the past and present with "that night."

Seeing the struggle both in the past and present, not only with Kathryn but her close relationships, is incredibly eye-opening. The author does an incredible job of handling this difficult subject matter of sexual trauma, and shows that there is more than one victim in these types of ordeals. The reader has a clear view of this story from all angles, including from the point-of-view of the abusers, which I have to admit was difficult to read at times, but really brings home the message of grace in a truly powerful way.

Though there were difficulties in reading such a powerful story, it was well worth it, and The Watcher is high on my must read list for 2021. The character depth is unparalleled and the writing admirable, especially how tastefully done the abuse scenes were done. There is nothing graphic, but more alluded to, yet you still feel how powerful these moments are. You can't help but feel for the characters as they each travel down their own difficult roads, and feel like a part of yourself is enduring it with them. Such an incredibly powerful novel that I truly feel everyone needs to read!
