An excellent, thought-provoking drama based on one family in the United States. Academic father (William Hurt), outgoing exuberant mother (Meryl Streep), career-minded daughter (Renée Zellwegger) and light-hearted son (Tom Everett Scott). We know from the start that a tragedy has happened, and the story is cleverly told in flashback form, moving forward to the inevitable bitter-sweet conclusion.

Mesmerising performances, particularly from Meryl Streep; we hardly noticed that it's over two hours in length. I was surprised it was rated 15 (R in the United States!) as there's nothing explicit, with no violence. Even the bad language is not inappropriate, and I'd have felt that 12 would better demonstrate the level, though the subject matter could be disturbing, and there's not a lot in it to interest anyone under about fifteen.

Definitely recommended, so long as serious illness and parent-child stresses don't upset you.
