If you've ever wondered what it's like to voice the part of an animated character, then Rand Unwrapped with certainly give you a glimpse.

Drawing on his own experiences, Frank Catalano gives us a mini-autobiography while, at the same time, draws parallels between his life and the people in it, and those of some of the characters in animated movies.

As the author explains: "It's not a book about [Robotech's] The New Generation or its characters or plot line". Rather, it's about how Catalano searches his own experiences to help make the character of Rand come alive for the viewers and fans.

It's a tough job, sometimes. In many cases, the actor has only his or her own lines to do. There aren't any other characters' lines previously recorded, or even other actors with whom to react or respond.

Although I, personally, thought the author could have given more background information on the making of Robotech (particularly for those readers who haven't seen or heard of the series -- and I'm sure there are some), still, many of his personal anecdotes brought back memories of my own childhood and teenage years. As well, I recall events in my own life revolving around the trepidation during my first date, my first kiss, my first hunt for a job. And many readers will, too.

And, in spite of the numerous errors that a sharp-eyed editor would have caught and corrected, nevertheless this book is an interesting and insightful look behind the scenes of the work involved in dubbing, or even adding voices to an animated film or series.

In the end, the author hopes that Robotech -- even though it is just an animated series -- will help its viewers learn to hold their ground and stand up for what they believe in.
