Cecile Elkins Carter

This is an excellent history of the Caddo and northeastern Texas from 1690-1859. Carter is a proficient story-teller, giving the reader a good sense of her source material, whether it is archeological finds, historical documentation or oral history.

The end (disputes with Texan settlers and removal to Oklahoma) is difficult to read. Part of Carter's story is the power that the Caddo had in the Red River region, and the end of the book tells the loss of that power through population decline, land loss and territorial invasion, culminating in removal.… (plus d'informations)
