This is an account of the development of classical genetics by a geneticist. Fittingly, it is fairly heavy on technical details and pays almost no attention to wider currents in society outside the circle of scientific researchers. It does make the reader aware of the very real technical and theoretical difficulties (and disagreements) that framed the research environment, and Carlson brings out the technical contributions of several figures who are usually overlooked in textbook narratives.
