This book is a wonder of terse compression. Pages 1–64 are the introduction (Camps calls it an "essay"), and pages 65–108 are supplementary notes and appendices. Matters such as historical background and themes are dealt with briefly, and the place of Homer in Greek and world literature is not covered at all. The real meat of this book is on how the Homeric literature functions - 20 pages are devoted to Homeric poetry.

This introduction is not as satisfying as that by rel="nofollow" target="_top">Griffin. Published reviews have noted its uneveness. However, it does contain valuable insights and is a good introduction to how Homeric poetry functions and why it has its effect.… (plus d'informations)
